AYT Mathematics: Piecewise Derivatives and the Chain Rule: Common Mistakes
The most common mistake in the chain rule is either not writing the derivative of the inner function at all, or deriving it with respect to the wrong variable. Clearly naming the outer and inner functions before starting the solution reduces this risk.
In piecewise defined functions, continuity and differentiability around critical points must be checked separately. In one-sided derivatives, clarifying the direction of the derivative will save you time in the second half of the problem.
Reinforcing the examples you solved together in online class with a short set of "same pattern, different coefficients" on the same day quickly makes it automatic. In the Solo Rota plan, these types of reinforcement sets are part of the weekly routine.
- Clarify your target score (TYT / AYT) and your current target score range.
- Set a weekly review + question + short test cycle on your calendar.
- Note down common areas of weakness that emerge in online classes and carry them over to your next independent study session.
